Evaluation
May 21, 2009 by i06mfisherI set out to design the front cover, contents page and a double page spread for an indie music magazine. My product would fit into the real media marketplace alongside music magazines such as NME and Mojo. Although both of these were my main style models, my magazine is intended to appeal more to a younger audience, similar to NME. I have, however, put a split focus on content and appearance in my magazine which would hopefully make it more appealing to an older audience also.
In my planning I looked at and analysed current music magazines. I did in depth textual analysis on pages from my style models, NME and Mojo and also looked at other magazines such as Kerang and Q to see if there were any aspects I could carry through into my magazine. I looked at the conventions of these magazines so I had a good idea of what to bring through into my product. I applied these conventions to my final product with a view to making it appear more professional. I made sure I included all the most obvious conventions, i.e. price, bar code, issue number and a masthead. This ensured that my magazine had all the necessary elements for selling a product if it was to be introduced into the real media marketplace and the masthead gives it an easily recognizable title. I decided to use the colours from my masthead throughout my product to give it a consistent appearance. The one deviation from this was on the contents page were a small portion of font was white simply to make it easier to read due to the photo behind it. I also used a house font for all short pieces of text. I used a simple typeface for the review and interview on my double page spread so it was easier to read. Another convention on my front cover was a banner along the bottom of the page. This was designed to give more information on the contents of the magazine. On my double page spread I made sure I included a gutter. I used the guides on Photoshop to make sure it stayed the same width on both double pages. This made the magazine look well made and gave it the appearance of a real publication. I didn’t intentionally go against any magazine conventions but I gave my magazine more of an edge with the colour scheme. Red carries connotations of danger which ties in with the stereotypical rock and roll lifestyle that would appeal to a large part of my target audience who aspire to be like the artists featured in the magazine. I chose to use a crimson colour instead of a brighter red because it gives a slightly more sophisticated feel to my product which was again intended to make my magazine appeal more to an older audience.
I arranged a date with a friend to take photos for my main article. I tried to get photos that would help build up a persona for my artist, that of an indie, predominantly acoustic musician. I picked which photos to use with the layout of the pages being the main priority. I didn’t organize a time to take the other photos I used on the contents page but shortly after I wrote the headings I got photos of some of the artists mentioned.
The main target audience for my media project is teenagers from around the ages of 14 to 18, specifically fans of live music, indie in particular. I have, however, tried to appeal to a wider audience and not target my product specifically at one social group. I have taken some inspiration from magazines such as Mojo and Q that are aimed more at an older audience and tried to bring that through into my product to ensure that the possible audience is as unconstrained as possible. I tried to appeal to my main target audience by running a cover story on an artist who is easy for them to associate with, i.e. a 17 year old who still goes to college and lives with his dad. Admittedly this is all true of him in reality but there would be nothing to stop me changing his age and lifestyle for the sake of the magazine. So it was a conscious choice to present him as a stereotypical teenager. I also took into account the cost of the magazine. Most teenagers aren’t likely to have vast amounts of money to spend so I had to make sure my magazine was reasonably priced and as the results of my questionnaire told me that a price of between £2-3 would be optimum I chose to price it at £2.50. The results of the questionnaire showed that most people would be most likely to buy a magazine that came out once every month so I decided on a monthly magazine as it seems to be the most popular option.
I tried to include most of the sections that were popular in my questionnaire in my product. Interviews and reviews came out as the most popular so I included both of these in my main article as well as mention of both on my contents page. The majority of people also said that they would definitely or possibly take part in a competition so I decided to advertise a competition on the front cover. As the majority of people who answered my questionnaire were in the age group of my target audience I hoped that including these features would make it more appealing to them.
As I have previously mentioned, I tried not to make my product exclusive to one group and target it at a wider audience so to appeal to an older audience I put a focus on the written content of my main article as opposed to the appearance. I also included mention of rock stars from a by-gone era in my article. The likes of Joe Strummer, Jimi Hendrix and Junior Murvin, much as they may hold some sway with younger generations, are more likely to appeal to people around the age of 40. I thought that if my magazine was not purely focused on new music it would be more accessible to someone who possibly is not as interested in the new music scene at present.
As regards technology I feel that over the course of producing my product I have come to realize that simplicity is often the best policy. Whereas before I would often include filters and effects in my work on Photoshop I now recognize that designing this type of publication is more about layout and the composition of a page. I have also learnt not to discard anything that isn’t technology based. I have only now come to appreciate how helpful books can be and have only utilised this in writing my evaluation. If I was to do a similar project again I would definitely look to do more research from books and not just the internet.
Looking back at my preliminary task I feel that I have come to appreciate the subtleties involved in producing a magazine. By which I mean things like, how does a specific photo add to the aesthetic of a page or when is it necessary to use Photoshop functions such as threshold. I used threshold on the main photo for my preliminary task but looking back I don’t see that it really added much to the page visually and as such I kept all the photos I used for my main task as they naturally are.
I felt that the main strength of my product was the photography and how it was incorporated into the layout of a specific page. On the front cover I think that the page came together well as it was built up around the photo I picked to use as a background. I was also pleased with how the photos fitted in to my double page spreads. The cut outs were well placed to add to the visual impact of the page and the other photos make a simple yet effective use of the space. I also liked the use of a house font and colour scheme. I think that carrying one font through the product gave it a more structured, somewhat crisper feel and the use of the crimson and black throughout was effective in creating a contrast between the rough and ready look of the font and the sleek colours used for it. The main weakness in my production was definitely the planning. This is essentially down to bad time management on my part and would be easily avoidable in future by pacing the work and not leaving things to the last minute. As regards the final product, speaking broadly, I was least pleased with the contents page. I felt that I found a nice balance on the front cover and double page spreads between use of photos, use of text and leaving blank space but on the contents page I couldn’t seem to find that same harmony. This could possibly have been improved by having more initial ideas for the layout of the page and I could have spent more time producing a few alternative flat plans.
All in all, I am pleased with how my final product came out. I arranged a focus group with four friends of similar age, two girls and two boys which I felt was a good representation of my main target audience. The response was very positive and they all said they would consider buying it. They said the fact that the magazine focused on new, young artists would appeal. The only criticism of note was that some of the type, especially on parts of the front cover was hard to read. The only thing I find myself regretting is that I didn’t put the same effort into planning from the outset and I did in the week before the deadline.
evaluation of the main task

Evaluation of the main task
I decided to produce a radio news bulletin (maximum of 5mins) for people aged between18 to 25.
In order for me to make it sound professional I had to research the conventional features of a radio news bulletin and to know what my target audience preferred listening to. Therefore I drew a mind map with my initial ideas which were, to have an interview with a radio presenter, visit to one of the local radio stations and questionnaire etc.
My research highlighted the conventions of real media products such as vox pop, archive clip, news jingle and actuality etc. In addition to this there were also sports news and weather forecast within the news bulletin. Therefore I decided to include sports and weather as well as having the news itself. I did this because it helps to add little bit more variety and interests more people and most important of all is that it will sound conventional. This will help to fit my product in the media industry as it will sound genuine and attract the target customers.
So the way I decided to use the convention features was to plan little sections of the 5minutes news bulletin. For instance, I planned 5 sections which were the starting (jingle, ident etc), the main news stories, sports stories, the weather and the headlines. I have included the conventional features mainly in the news stories itself such as an interview, vox pop, actuality and OB etc.
Many interviewers can be biased towards an issue and they often try and ask questions which interviewees find it difficult to answer. Taking this idea in my radio news bulletin you will notice how the interviewer has asked questions such as, “isn’t that the reason why there is …” also he has changed his tone of voice so that he is able to reinforce his question. One of the facts is that the interviewer has to make sure he has the power over the interviewee all the time however it depends on the situation and the subject.
Through radio analysis I found out that they had a variety of voices (male and female) so through out the main task I used a lot of many different speakers considering there tone of voice, accent, gender, ethnicity etc. Using more than one person, it helped to add a lot of realism and different variety of voices made it much more interesting to listen to. Another advantage of using contrasting tone of voices is that the listener will find it easier to recognise the transitions.
Listening to news on the radio I discovered that the order of the stories were different on different radio stations. On some radio stations the stories were presented in the order of most important to the least important. On others, the stories were just local and national stories. This was probably because it was a local radio station. However I decided to challenge this so the order in which my stories were read out were in order of importance however I set it in a way that it linked with the next story and so on. The reason behind this was to hook the listener and prevent them from not being interested in the rest of news. Also it is easy for them to understand and remember what views and opinions they have on the same topic. An example of this kind of link is the topic on unemployment and foreign labours.
It shows both sides of the argument as you can see what public demands are in terms of unemployment levels are rising and then you also hear what the prime minister is willing to do in order for him to fulfil the public demands. However the order for this is the opposite because you hear what Gordon Brown says and then you hear the public protesting.
Another factor that I have considered is the lexis and the level of formality. I have made sure that the language used is sophisticated enough for people aged 18-25 to understand.
The stories I have included are local, national and international although it is broadcasted on local radio. For example the first story was about the interest rates. This is not a local topic- it’s national. The reason why I chose to have national story first was because it affects everyone.
I used a lot of sound effects, jingles, vocals etc. This helped to sound very similar to a real news bulletin. I think the vocals and the volume are major part of the overall feel.
In terms of representation I found out that there is a stereotype view which is that news read out by people with Indian ethnicity connotes that they are more likely to be true. Therefore I decided to use Pritesh Joshi. For the sports news I had a male voice because through textual analysis I found out that the most sports readers were men. I think this is a conventional feature but I also think this is due to the stereotypical view that exists which is that men are more likely to be associated with sports in comparison to women.
I decided to produce a radio news bulletin for sophisticated 18-25 year old.
This affected some of the choices that I made while I was producing my final product. For example the language used was not highly sophisticated however it had a level of formality to a certain extent. The results from the questionnaire showed me that my target audience wanted to hear only young presenters.
The choice of producing a radio news bulletin has been the right choice because now I have learnt how to use the editing software, such as garage band. I made a lot of mistakes through which I learned from. For instance, I realised I should only start editing after I have completely finished recording. Otherwise you will end up having to edit all over again only because you need to insert a clip in the middle.
Preliminary task has helped me a lot because through that I learnt how to use the garage band software. As I did not plan properly for my preliminary task I realised how difficult it was to construct 30sec clip involving the intro and an archive clip. As well as learning how to use garage band to record and edit, it was like a wake up call so for my main task I made sure that I have produced a detailed script. For my preliminary task, I realised there were difficulties to get people to record as they have different timetable compared to mine. In order for me not repeat this mistake again I made sure that I had organised everything before recording.
I believe there are number of strengths as well as weaknesses of my product.
One of most important strength of my product is that as soon as it starts, you notice the first conventional feature which is the news jingle itself. I have chosen a typical jingle which has recognisable connotations. This helps to attract the target audience right from the start and also fits into the market as it will sound conventional. It also boosts the expectations of the listener and therefore will encourage them to carry on listening.
My final product consists of many other conventional features such as vox pop, OB (outside broadcast), actuality, interview, archive clip etc. This has helped to add a lot more variety in terms of the news content. Having a wide variety of such features attracts more of the target audience.
Another strength that my product has is that it has a variety of voices, which makes it more interesting to listen to. In order for me to add variety of voices I made sure that the voices of my speakers were different to each other. In this way it will help to make the transitions very clear and obvious. An example of this is in the interview with the local councillor, the interviewer must sound different to the interviewee. In addition to that I inserted stingers in between news stories which worked very well to distinguish the transitions more clearly.
By having Pritesh Joshi as the news reader, it was a great advantage because he is actually a real radio presenter, so his voice was clear and loud enough for the audience to be able to hear. He new how to talk on a microphone (how far your mouth has to be from the mike etc) which made it easier for me to record. In fact I learnt a lot from him in terms of how radio stations work compared to how I was recording a news bulletin to be broadcasted.
One of the weaknesses of my product is that the background noise I have used in the vox pop is not what I initially wanted. The background noise is from the software garage band however I think that if I had recorded the real background noise, it would have sounded much more realistic and effective.
Although I used many different kinds of people for the vox pop I do not think I should have recorded their sound in the editing suite and edited the sound clips to make a montage. However if I had actually gone out on the streets to record people it would have made it sound much ore sensible.
This is something that I have learnt in the process of constructing a radio news bulletin and in the future I can improve the way I record the vox pop by physically going out on the streets and doing a vox pop for real.
One of the elements that I really like about my product is when the news reader makes a front announcement about when the interest rates will be declared and later refers back to it to declare the interest rate.
This element hooks the listener on for longer and also it is a conventional feature so it helps to fit in with the market place
In terms of pronunciation there are two words which were not said clearly or correctly. One of them was ‘route’ and the other was ‘secure.’ In the future I will listen to what I have recorded and ask the speaker to say it once more if I am not happy with their pronunciation. However next time I will consider who I choose and make sure they have clearer speech.
Another weakness of my product is that the volume and the pitch of the clips vary so much in some areas that it does not sound professional. For example when the news reader starts to read out the next story it almost sounds like the clips were recorded at different times. This does not make the news fluent and does not sound like the news is broadcasted live.

For my AS Media coursework I chose to create a hip-hop music magazine front cover, which also required me to create the magazine’s contents page and a double page spread featuring an article.
Initial planning
During the planning stage of the coursework, I carried out research on music magazines. For example, what is featured on the front cover of a magazine?
For my research, I used sources such as existing music magazines, and carried out textual analysis which helped me with the features which make up a good magazine. By doing these textual analysis’s I gained knowledge on what makes a magazine appealing to the audience, as well as how males and females are represented in the media.
I also created a questionnaire aimed at my target audience (which was mainly older teenagers), asking general questions in relation to magazines.
The results from the questionnaire given to 20 people helped me create my magazine as it gave me indications of what my audience would like to see in magazines.
Analyse your final product
My final product uses conventions of real media products. I did this by looking at similar music magazines to the one I was creating (hip-hop genre).
One of the conventions which I looked at was the slogans and images used on front covers. The use of images being stretched across the entire front cover helps suggest the main feature of the magazine and can be appealing to the audience, especially if it’s a celebrity. Slogans are also commonly found to be stretched across the page, and the majority of the times, overlapping the image. I took this into consideration during the production of my magazine.
I also used unconventional methods during production, but just to see what the magazine would look like. Taking into account that images and slogans are mainly used across the entire front cover, I decided to challenge this convention by using smaller images and smaller slogans. I found that this did not work as effectively as there were many blank spaces on the front cover, making it look so empty and dull.
Another convention which I looked at in detail was the colours used on the front cover. By looking at similar magazines I found that the hip-hop genre is represented with a variety of colours, mainly towards the darker shades. Black was a common colour which I saw being used, as well as a dark shade of blue. The brighter colours such as yellow tend not to be used as they have connotations such as; soft, happiness and intellect. The brighter colours did not go well with the genre hip-hop, because the darker colours attract to the type of audience I have created the magazine for.
For both the preliminary and main task projects, we were to use original images. This meant I had to take images using a digital camera, and not copying and pasting from the internet. Once the photos were taken on the camera, I was able to crop and edit them on the computer and then insert them onto my magazine.
The fonts used in the hip-hop genre tended to be “hard” and “aggressive”, so I decided to challenge this convention by looking at what a softer, basic font would look like on my front cover, as a title and a slogan. I chose an italic, bold font, but this did not work for the type of magazine and colours which were in use, so I went with the original convention and found an appropriate font to use.
Representation
In the research part of my coursework, representation within the genre was a very important thing to look at. It was important for me to research existing material related to my work, for example existing music magazines and television shows, as I would be able to get an idea of how people are represented in the hip-hop genre.
In the hip-hop genre of music, there are hardly any women artists, if any at all. This particular genre is represented to be for the male gender, which I took into consideration during production of my magazine, and also when taking my images.
Because of the research I carried out before designing my product I had a general idea of what to have on the front cover seeing as a hip-hop magazine is targeted towards the male gender.
Information from the internet was also a vital source helping me with the representation within the genre of hip hop. I was able to navigate through certain hip-hop websites and music websites to gain some knowledge of fonts used in this genre.
Audience
The target audience for my media product would be males aged 16 and above who are music lovers of the hip-hop genre.
When constructing my product I took into consideration the target audience as I had to aim my product towards this group and make it as appealing to them as possible.
This affected the choices I made whilst constructing my product.
I decided to use sharp fonts which were more appealing and attractive on the front cover, along with the nature of the genre.
The colours which I chose to use on the front cover was influenced by my target audience, as general research into existing media related products, for example existing magazines, showed me that darker colours were influential in the consumers buying choices.
Technologies
In the process of constructing my media product I have learnt a few things about technologies. Most of my work was done using a computer, for example I used a word processor to type up my documents and used illustrating software to produce my magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread.
If I was to hand write my work, and I was to lose my work, I would have to start from scratch, whereas I was able to save my work on the computer so it would be easier for me to make amendments if necessary.
Preliminary task
Looking back at the preliminary task I have learnt a considerable amount in terms of using Photoshop, and actually using existing media material to analyse conventions.
Using Photoshop during the preliminary task was vital as I had never used this software prior to this. I was able to learn the basic techniques and skills in order to create my media project.
It was possible for me to mess around with the tools and correct mistakes in the preliminary project, which was an advantage as I would know what to do when it came round to the main task of creating a music magazine front cover, contents page and double page spread.
Using existing media material related to my project gave me a huge advantage in terms of I knew what to include on a hip-hop magazine front cover, and what appeals to the target audience, for example, darker colours and sharp, aggressive fonts.
Evaluation of your product
One of the strengths of my final product was the overall design of the front cover which I think was produced well in terms of colour, representation of a male artist, headings and title. What helped me the most with my choices throughout production was the existing media material which I was able to analyse and gain knowledge from, for example, existing music magazines. I carried out detailed textual analysis of similar magazines to the one I was creating so I gained some expert knowledge on what the audiences want in order to buy a magazine and for it to appeal to them specifically.
Also in my final product, I used my original images to create an artist and an exclusive interview in my double page spread. It made him out to be famous, as in my questionnaire I found that the audience get attracted to magazines because of the celebrities featured.
AS Media Coursework Evaluation.
May 20, 2009 by i06sloyalAS Media Coursework Evaluation
In my initial planning I set out to produce an Indie magazine for people between the ages of 14 and 25. To achieve this I would have to make the context of the product fit within the real media marketplace. I set to make the context conventional to existing Indie magazines yet original and to do this I conducted a lot of research in the area to gather as much information as I could which would aid me in the production of my product.
In my final product I tried to integrate many conventions that I found in my research. The main ones I found were the use of bold, capital lettering which I used a lot in my product. Other conventions that I found and used in my magazine were headers and footers, a recognised colour scheme throughout the pages and using the masthead also in the pages not only on the front cover.
I decided to apply these conventions to my magazine as I found that they were very common and to attract to the audience I would have to use these so it would look more appealing. I looked at how they were laid out on the page and used this to help me with my production.
When taking the photos I had to think about the background very carefully to make them look realistic and conventional. I told the ‘models’ to look at the camera which would make eye contact with the readers grabbing them to the magazine. I tried to use different background and settings to make the images more suitable and fit in with the context. For example on my double page spread I made up a feature called “hunt me down!” which would be pictures readers sent it of them with ‘celebrities’. I told them to look as though they were taking a casual photo, not posing, to make it seem more natural. When researching magazines I saw that they tended to use repeated images. I used this idea and used the same picture on my front page and double page spread which would make the readers more familiar with it.
For my front cover, I aimed to make it less formal and make it recognisably targeted to the audience. I did this by putting the pictures and text at a slant which made it look eventful and not in a set ordered form. I chose to use red, black and white for the main colour scheme. Red because it connotes loudness, youth and edginess which would represent indie music and black and white because they compliment red and make it stand out more. On most the text I put a stroke of a contrasting colour. I found that this was conventional in a lot of magazines, used to highlight important pieces of text. Also, much of the text is different colours which makes the page look fun and exciting. I was pleased with the name of the magazine as it is something that represents music so he audience knows instantly what type of magazine it is. I made the “THE” in the masthead res with noise around it making it look informal and which is also something that represents music. It looks near to spray paint which connotes youth. The “MUSIC” is the biggest word in the masthead because I wanted it to stand out the most out of all the words as this is what the magazine is solely about. I put the word “BOX” behind a solid red background where I put a shadow on making it look like an actual box. I planned to carry on with this notion throughout the magazine.
Over the masthead I put a bright noticeable advertisement for a free CD. I did this deliberately so when people looked at the masthead they would see this and be more likely to purchase the magazine.
I wanted to make this issue of a magazine different to others so incorporated the idea of “The Music Box Awards” which would be the main feature of the magazine. I made the logo for The Music Box Awards using the masthead and drew a green wave line in the background which connotes music. I also tried to break the convention of the idea of all indie artists are white males so added a picture of an artist that appears to have an Asian background. I used yellow to highlight the main features of the magazine which is an eye catching colour and would attract people to it. I chose not to put many pictures on the front page and make it more text based as I would include a lot of images in the other pages. The main image of ‘Foxy’ is wearing a red and white jumper which reflects the colour scheme of the magazine. This is conventional in indie magazines to have the main image reflect the magazine. This main image is partly covered by an advertisement in the top right corner which shows that the advertisement is more important.
I presented the contents page in a formal way as this is common in magazines. It makes it easier to read and makes it look neater compared to the front cover. At the top I put the masthead in the same position as it is on the front cover which makes the reader recognisable with it more. I also included the date and a big title “THIS WEEK”. This way the readers know that this page is the contents page. I added an editor letter and drew a signature which makes the reader feel like I am writing to them and more involved with the letter. I used a puff with a yellow background again to highlight the feature and break up the colour of the page, to make it look less boring and more exciting. As I put the main stories on the front cover, I put the most important ones on the context page. It is conventional in indie magazines not to include every page on the contents page. As I did on the front cover I didn’t stick with one colour for the text making it look more excited despite being laid out in a formal way. As I planned to do, I carried on the theme of the box with the title “ON THE COVER” to represent the magazine. I chose the main image very carefully, trying to get a funny natural picture. I think I succeeded in his however I could have made it brighter or though about the setting more to make it look more conventional.
For my double page spread I chose to do a letters page and include reader-generated content of letters and pictures. When looking at indie magazines I saw the text was set in a set way, were it was all lined up on one side. I tried to do this but found difficulty when faced with blank space. To over come this I wrote a letter which talked about The Music Box Awards, therefore I would be able to full the space up with the logo which would be relevant. Again I used the colour scheme of red, black and white so the reader would be familiar with the magazine. I included a separate feature called “hunt them down” which included the reader on a personal level. I chose to have a page with reader-generated content because it makes the reader feel more in tune and make it feel like there magazine. I tried to incorporate humorous headings such as “A PAGE JUST FOR YOU, GENEROUS EH?” This is very common in indie magazines, which takes the seriousness away. For the letters I opted for Arial as the font which is casual and common in magazines. I wrote editors letters back to majority of the letters and put a red background behind them to make it easier to differentiate from the readers letter. It also makes the page look less boring, colourful and edgy as it has random bursts of colours. I saw that in many magazines the convention was to have a large and bold first letter. I did this with the W as an indication of where the main body of the page starts. I included a footer which has the page number, masthead and issue date of the magazine which I found was common in indie magazines. I also saw however, that they were not on every page so I refrained from doing it on the contents page.
As said before I chose to target my product to 14-25 year olds that were interested in indie music. This affected my choices in many ways. Firstly, I had to think about the layout of the magazine as I noticed this differed between different music genre magazines. Secondly, I had to think about the images I was taking and who/what I was taking them of. To make my magazine look conventional I needed the ‘models’ to fit in with the genre i.e. look like musicians/band members. This choice of audience I was aiming at affected the context greatly as I needed to have language and articles that would appeal to them. The amount of text was also important to think about which fitted in with the layout.
Whilst making my product I attained a much wider knowledge on the use of Photoshop. I learnt a large number of skills and techniques to use and found many ways that I could manipulate context such as fonts and images to suit the genre and look like a proper magazine.
Looking back at the preliminary task I feel I have progressed a lot especially with the use of Photoshop. I felt much more confident and in tune with the task at hand as I understood the programme and the use of target audiences a lot more. When doing the preliminary task I knew a very limited amount of things that I was able to do which prevented me in directing the magazine in the way I wanted to go.
I feel the strength of my product is the use of conventions that I tried to use throughout the pages, not only on the front cover. I also think that a strength is how the colour scheme also runs through the pages making the pages look like from the same magazine without being do overly different.
Moreover, I feel the weaknesses of the product are the images and the blank space. When taking the images I think I could have made them fit in with the context more by using better backgrounds and using props.
